Lapaglia was born on January 31, 1959 in Adelaide, Australia. His father was of Italian descent while his mother was born to Dutch parents.Anthony spent 25 years in his hometown before he left for Los Angeles. In his late teens, he began to venture into dramatic art by enrolling in an acting course at the South Australian Castings Agency. He left for California after finishing a year and a half of acting course.

In the beginning, Lapaglia wanted to have a full-time teaching career in United States. But, a career detour took place and he had acting as his work. His television debut happened in 1985 with the television series Stephen Spielberg’s Amazing Stories. He was again seen in two separate shows in 1987, the Cold Steel and Nitti: The Enforcer.

In the 1990 movie Betsy’s Wedding, the rising star gained significant credits for his portrayal of a polite gangster. In 1991, he was listed as one of 12 “Promising New Actors” in John Willis’s Screen World, Vol. 4. Lapaglia had a role in the Broadway production A View from the Bridge in 1997-1998. His lead role, Eddie Carbone, gave him a Tony Award for Best Actor. The role of Tony Soprano in the HBO series The Sopranos  was first offered to Anthony in 1999.He had to turn the role down because of his Broadway role and several other factors.

His operation was successful and he was back playing football with Hollywood United. The award-winning actor needed to undergo another hip replacement surgery in 2010. In order for his new hip to fully develop, he had to be away from the joy of playing soccer for a while. Lapaglia wanted his hips to be free from complications that may put him at risk for a hip replacement recall, so he opted not to expose it to extreme forces.
