Just received the Nikon SB-700 today from Amazon following a 3 month wait - I have always been not disappointed. I have been a Nikon user considering that 70's, and have owned every N and D pro bodies, and involved flash units. I have seen all the reviews on the net criticizing Nikon for omitting the HOME PC input and power input - they know if and when they included these features it would have killed sales for the SB900. Like others, unless I need maximum power from my flash (which is certainly rare); I can get by aided by the SB600 and most recently, the SB400 for the majority of of my (fill) flash work. I mainly use the flash for fill and now have it on the camera 100% of times. For "walking around" the SB400 works great due to the size and weight. When I have got to use bounce flash, I typically use the SB600. I still own the SB800 and SB900 but find myself rarely with them.
The Nikon SB-700 fills the gap - the most beneficial features of the flash are the smaller size and weight (vs. the SB900); better to use controls (I hated the SB600/800 controls); last but not least the hard plastic snap-on color correction filters. Nikon needs to make these (hard) filters for those SB900 - trying to use their gels and holder inside the field is crazy - you will either lose or damage the gels at the first try you are working under pressure. Also the bounce dome is in addition smaller than the large unit the fact that comes w/ the SB900.
The Nikon SB-700 is the first Nikon flash I've used that seems to discover the exposure right on. Normally I have to set the flash exposure to -0. 7 to acquire what I consider a normal subjection. I do not have to repeat this on the SB700. I also like the possibility that Nikon has gone to switches (vs. menu) to switch from Auto to help Manual exposure - I care less concerning the switch for the flash coverage as that isn't a setting I change - however , others who do change it will like the advantage that it's easy to switch on all the fly.
Back to the power input and PC sync input - triggered fans of the Stobist are very unhappy with regards to the inability to use their PC cords in their Pocket Wizards - most folks hate using the PC - Hot footwear cords; one more thing to not work right in the electrical chain. Personally - I miss the force input for the Nikon battery packs - and although I am sure Quantum will come out w/ a battery adapter to make use of w/ their packs, I haven't use my Quantum packs in years since I've changed into using the Nikon external packs that operate the AA's.
That said - think the Nikon SB-700 turns into the de facto standard flash; as well as the SB800 will continue to sell at eBay and Craig's list for more they likely sold new (I'm keeping mine) for that Strobist fans.
As to the overheating trouble; haven't had the unit long a sufficient amount of to see if it reacts identical to the SB900 - another review said the unit slows down on recycle point in time before shutting down - I've had my 900 close; so I have to carry a backup in case.
As of today (12/13/10) looks for instance Amazon isn't even taking orders to your unit; if you are in a hurry suggest checking your regional camera store - mine told me we were holding getting some in periodically -

Ummmm, to expand on what has already been said, no you cannot us a phone jack plug in to play online with the PS3. So if that is how you get on the internet with your computer than no it wont work. But if you have ethernet like its been said using cat5 cable than you can "possibly" play if you split it to your computer and ps3. If you are still confused you can call your internet providor and than can walk you though hook up or send a specialist out for a fee.
