Criteria To Take Into Consideration When Shopping For Cordless Loudspeakers
You may be overwhelmed by the quantity of wireless speakers on the market today. I'm going to help narrow down your choice by taking a peek at some of the key specs that have a big impact on audio quality and loudspeaker functionality.
When you have a big home then setting up wireless surround sound loudspeakers could be a daunting task. You possibly will not desire to drill holes in your walls to run speaker wires. As an alternative, cordless loudspeakers promise greatest independence and also ease of installation.
However, it might be difficult to select a suitable model given the multitude of products on the market.
Speaker power is among the first specs. The larger the loudspeaker wattage often the higher the speaker sound pressure level could be.
Speaker power is given either as RMS wattage which tells how much power the loudspeaker amp can endure continuously and maximum power which tells how much wattage the amplifier can handle for brief amounts of time.
However, keep in mind that audio signals have big surges in output power therefore make certain there is adequate headroom in the loudspeaker power rating to eliminate music compression at short audio bursts.
The frequency response of the loudspeaker shows the frequency range the loudspeaker is able to reproduce. However, different producers use various conventions when specifying the frequency response. Preferably you ought to get a copy of the speaker frequency response curve of every model for assessment.
Harmonic distortion, often called THD, will affect the sound quality of the speaker. This specific expression is either shown in dB as well as in % and tells just how much the sound is altered from the initial audio signal. The cordless receiver, power amplifier and also the transducers lead to distortion. Harmonic distortion will often grow with increasing audio wattage and as a result you want to look for which power the distortion is given. As soon as the output power approaches the highest specified wattage, harmonic distortion is going to significantly grow.
For those who choose a type with a large speaker power, you may prefer a loudspeaker which has a digital amplifier due to the high amplifier efficiency compared to analogue amps. Digital amps usually have higher harmonic distortion compared to analog amps. This distortion is in part caused by the switching FET stage of the amp.
Wireless loudspeakers often times have a number of transducers. Each driver is driven with a different area of the sound spectrum. The music signal is separated into different regions with a crossover. Several models incorporate individual amps for every driver.
The receiver that picks up the cordless audio either from a transmitter or from a wireless network or Bluetooth signal also has got a large affect on audio quality. For perfect audio quality, you might want to steer clear of 900 MHz analog wireless transmission that naturally has a low signal-to-noise ratio and as an alternative opt for a receiver which uses a digital music signal.
Wireless speakers that use digital transmission either receive uncompressed audio or make use of a standard just like Bluetooth that compresses music somewhat. Bluetooth music transmitters utilize audio compression and typically cannot broadcast to more than one speaker yet provde the advantage of not requiring a separate transmitter.
Do i need speaker spikes or not? (home recording)?
I have bought some monitor speakers and to get the best possible sound out of them i am building some stands for them. The speakers are on my desk and the stands will lift the speakers by about a foot so that the cone is in line with my ears. What i would like to know is do i need speaker cones or some sort of noise isolation pad and do i put the cones/pad between the speaker and stand or stand and table?. The speakers are only small and weigh 3.5kg so i'm thinking noise isolation pad between the speaker and stand. am i right?
Spikes will accomplish a few things, they isolate any vibrations coming from or going to the speakers. They also allow the speaker to transfer maximum energy back to the listener with minimal alteration in frequency responce.
Spikes work best because they do not absorb the energy like a pad would, but isolate them by minimizing sounds to be transferred from or two the speakers. Absorption like that from a pad is not linear in its absorption characteristics, and will absorb at certain frequency's and reflect at others, creating comb filtering as well as loss in presence and dynamics. This goes for all absorption material.
You will notice better detail, better bass definition and articulation, and more solid imaging.
The one key to understand is final placement should be done with the spikes in place which is a little tricky. When you put speakers on spikes it does tend to clean up the bass but in turn will make the bass sound leaner, so you will have to play with speaker positioning from room boundary's to get the right overall bass responce.
Your going to get allot of replies by people that really have no clue in advanced hi-end audio setups, such as this, so don't be surprised to see many people telling you it will make no difference with spikes.
Speaker height should also be determined by speaker and cross-over type. Speaker and cross-over design will have different polar tilts, meaning they maybe better sounding and more linear off axis. Some speakers may sound better lower then ear level, so you will want to play with speaker height to get the best sound.

MeiMei Fox: Barbra Streisand Takes the Stage for Women and Heart Disease (aolmusicnewsblog)
I was delighted to hear Barbra Streisand's talk at TEDxWomen about heart
disease -- a critical women's health issue -- because I learned all that she
