Recommended Second Languages for English Speakers
There are many articles in newspapers and on online websites in which various people claim they can learn any language, say learn spanish cd they want in just a few months, regardless of the cultural background of that language. While the fact that they can perfect a language in just a few months seems exaggerated, the real shocking issue is that they also claimed that they can also learn two or more languages at the same time. This means that in just a couple of month they could learn French and at the same time, Chinese. Learning a language that is very un-similar to your native language, like languages that even have a different set of letters and symbols, are quite hard to learn.
Languages that are spoken in Asia, Russia and African countries are the hardest languages on earth. Then, which are the languages that are easiest to learn? Here’s a small list:
- German is by far the easiest language to learn if you are familiar with English. Both languages have many basic words that are pretty much the same, so the initial understanding of German will be done much easier But there’s just one problem with German, a big one regarding word combining in spoken language. This combination returns tremendously big words, because if other nouns and adjectives are all a defining characteristic of a basic first noun, all the words will be united and written as a new combined word. A big word is Hoechsgeschwindigkeitsbegrenzung witch means speed limit, but this is not the longest word. Unfortunately words are not simply linked, but truncated then united.
- French is a language that is easily digested by many of world’s nations. The French language has many influences from English, but it also influenced itself the English language. The many wars that were held between the two nations throughout history lead to this common exchange of cultures. The similarities are very obvious, even if French is a Latin language and English isn’t.
- Last but not least, we have the Spanish language that might not be as similar with English but is very widespread and can be listened to in media, in the internet like rocket spanish review or even in real life. If you live in America, you surely have many neighbors that can speak Spanish and you can try and start a conversation with them. This would help a lot in the learning process.
In the World: Murmurs of Mayan (MIT)
Along with its stunningly accurate calendar and majestic pyramidal
architecture, the Mayan civilization deserves recognition for another unique
feature: its language.
Mayan languages are a rich source of data for linguists aiming to develop a
universal theory of language, but like many of the world’s tongues, their
speakers are steadily dwindling in number. MIT undergraduate John Berman spent
the past summer in a remote village in Mexico studying Chol — a Mayan language
spoken in the southern state of Chiapas — in the hopes of capturing some
important features of its grammar and vocabulary. Working first with a team of
researchers led by Jessica Coon PhD ’10, and later for several weeks on his
own, Berman immersed himself in a Chol-speaking community to document and
understand some of the language’s unique attributes.
“With Native American languages, they’re dying fairly quickly — whole families
of languages, even,” Berman says. “It’s important to do this research now
before it’s too late.”
Berman, a junior majoring in linguistics and math, says his interest in
“underspoken languages” was kindled by studying Latin before coming to MIT,
and reinforced in linguistics classes here at the Institute. He worked
extensively with Coon, now an ...
